one big day of suck

My garage (crap storage facility) has become home to a family of possums (okay, opossums). I have no idea how they were able to get the door open  and I have no idea how to get them to leave. I do know that possum poo is quite possibly the most foul smell on this planet (is that saying it strongly enough? no. It. Smells. Like. Death. Worse than death. Death rolled in poo.)
I used to think they were cute. I have changed my mind.

ETA: Well, that it explains it. Wikipedia: "When threatened or harmed, they will "play possum", mimicking the appearance and smell of a sick or dead animal. " (emphasis mine)

Today was full of Deep Thoughts and not enough sleep finally catching up to me, and man does that combo lead down depression road.
I’ve kind of been anxious over a certain mile-stone birthday and the fact that my life currently is…a disappointment. Add to that a ton of work-related stress and the above mentioned lack of sleep. Then minus about a decade of decent social interaction. Yeah.

But as all this rolled around in my head I came to a decision. I think, god help me, and despite having despised, loathed, been traumatized by, and otherwise quite strongly objected to high school (and college not being much better) I’m going back to school. Or rather take one or two courses that I’m pretty sure I’ll like even though they won’t do squat for transcripts or job opportunities. But I’m trying to make more of an effort here, to expand my comfort zone and maybe socialize just a little bit.
I wish I had thought of this about a month or two ago so I didn’t have to wait for next semester and hope that my new found resolve holds...but just this new determination has brightened my day and, dare I say, my outlook on my life. So yay! I guess.

What a weird day.

Also, I need new icons.

where i post before the new year

Decided it’s more than about time I offered up some recs (it’s been over a year!), so here…

The Waiting Place by Verbal Kint10
“No matter which way she chose, she was still out of gas. inspired by Dr. Seuss' "Oh the Places You'll Go"“
Out of the House fandom. It’s Amber Volakis in the sort of ‘what if’ scenario that’ll make your head spin in a dozen different directions. It will make you wish that you could watch a season of this show--and it’s so visually present you might feel as if you just saw the pilot.

Also, while I’m hesitant to rec works-in-progress, I can’t help but point in the direction of menme’s Aberrant also out of the House fandom.
“In trouble with a different kind of police. In love, maybe. In doubt about everything he believes. House/OFC, somewhat AU.”
It’s a well-written and fantastically unnerving (possibly even creepy) almost, sort of, historical AU.

...So go read.

I write dialogue. I enjoy writing dialogue, and I think I'm maybe a little bit good at it. It's the in-between parts that I have a hard time with (you know, pesky things like actions). So how have I gotten myself into a situation where three out of four of my characters do. not. like. to. talk. They won't even talk around things; they just insist upon being left to their work. In silence. (Well maybe with some music). How did I manage this?

free cats to a not-necessarily-good home!

I am a dog person. However, my roommate has two cats. Two cats that do not get along. Ever. (This is just background; it will likely not be relevent.) Last night as I was calling them in only one acknowledged my existence and actually came inside. But I saw the other one high-tail it around the side of the house. Cats, I grumbled, I hate you. I then gave chase. But, whoa. That is not my roommate's cat. That is not a cat at all. That is a skunk. The animal I was trying overly hard to persuade into coming into my house was a skunk! A skunk!
Screw the cat; I went inside. And locked the door (because everyone knows you're safer from skunks with a locked door).

Tonight I was once again reminded of the many reasons why I love Pushing Daisies.

Example:
The snappy dialogue!
The colors!
The costumes!
The pretty people!
The possibility of an Olive Snook & Emerson Cod detecting duo!
The narrator!
The dialogue, people! The dialogue!

*sigh*

So it tends toward light & fluffy, but can I say how much I utterly adore ABC's (*spit*) Castle? Love. LOVE. Which has me quite worried. I'm also liking The Unusuals. Sigh.
I have the horrid feeling I will be weeping this time next month.

Um, yeah.... Wait. What?
I'll admit I was never very impressed with ABC's "American version" of Life On Mars, but I still (foolishly) tuned in every week for Ray. So of course I watched the series finale. Big. Big. HUGE mistake. They took bad and made it worse. And a joke. Ugh. Just...ugh. Nope.
I will be sticking firmly to the BBC universe and Ashes to Ashes.

The Christmas tree is finally out of the house, the ornaments have been packed away, the fallen needles have been cleaned up, and the furniture has been put back to rights. I said finally, right?
I know. I just wish the feeling of accomplishment wasn't tainted with so much pathetic.
Oh well.

We finally got a wii. So: YAY!  Subsequently I have been wasting much time building mii characters. It's the battle of the 80's TV characters--with some Harry Potter & co. Let me say that Snape is a ridiculously easy guy to make into a mii. Thomas Magnum and Higgins...not so much. In fact the current "Magnum" looks disturbingly like my dad. Emphasis on the disturbing. He's a good bowler though.
Also, the Christmas tree MUST GO OUT. Seriously. The wii is not helping in this matter.

Ergh, so I didn't absolutely nothing this weekend except make soup and drive my mother to the airport. (I swear it felt like sending her off to camp. Do you have your gloves, scarf, hat, clean underwear? Don't forget to take pictures.) But doing nothing felt nice. Sister rented Hancock and Made of Honor. Both were exactly as advertised, so only Hancock was enjoyable. Still it was nice to see Kevin McKidd again (though I by far would have preferred seeing him in Journeyman --with short hair).

Ugh. I am so tired. Why can I run on 5 hours of sleep but feel exhausted and achy on 9?

So there was a gift tin of Christmas cookies left at work. And I ate one. And though it was pushing the limit on freshness I must say it was quite yummy. So yummy in fact that I challenged myself to track that recipe down. And I think I succeeded with Mocha Nut Butter Balls (not really an appealing name--not aesthetically appealing either, but sooo good). I will attempt my hand at baking, or perhaps bribery, and find out.

Yay!

After entirely too much frustration and worry I now have a functioning installation of photoshop. whee!  Now if only it hadn't mysteriously taken so very long and I wasn't too tired to do anything with it. sigh. I guess it will still be there tomorrow (it had better be!)

I like the movie 'Elf'. I do. It's one of my favorite Christmas movies, but a 24 hour marathon! Are you kidding me? I'm not sure there is any movie that ought to be on for 24 consecutive hours. Ugh. And it's New Years, what's up with the Christmas movie marathon anyway?

Well, happy New Years!

Um, what happened to November?

Ugh. I am not ready for the holidays. I'm not ready for December, damn it! I just mailed out my cards today (bad, I know--I told you I wasn't ready!), but there were only two that really needed to arrive by the 25th...so, who knows, maybe a tiny Christmas miracle. *shrug*
I can't say that Christmases as a kid were all Hallmark Channel Holiday Special or anything, but I wish I had realised that the last one had been the last one. It's just not the same as a single-type grownup. I guess this is the time I should be concentrating more on "peace on Earth, good will toward men" than pajamas and hot cocoa and slippers and stockings. Oh well.

a) Happy Holidays!
b) Happy winter!
c) Happy December!
d) All of the above! (because it too needs an exclamation point!!!)

Despite being opening weekend I actually managed to see The Dark Knight in a half-empty theater. Can't say if that's exactly good news for the box office, but I was extremely pleased not to be forced next to "smelly guy", "obnoxious talker", "giggling teen", or "screaming baby/toddler". Actually, come to think of it, this is the first time in a looong time that I have not sat near an obnoxious talker. Whoot! (There were some irritating guffaw-ers, but at least they were having fun--far away.)
The movie was awesome. A far, far cry from Batman & Robin. Firstly, the script did not suck. Secondly, Heath Ledger made the Joker creepy as fuck. Very cool. The rest of the cast did exceptional work as well, except, I hate to say, Maggie Gyllenhaal who was just okay.

There is a very large spider (I am not exaggerating when I tell you 3"---three inches!!) loose somewhere in my living room. Last spotted on my sofa it has since evaded capture. And now I am freaked out of my own living room. What's worse, now it could be making tracks for anywhere in my house.

Okay, so it's been a while since I recced anything (or even posted), but I've been reading a lot of Harry Potter lately so I thought I'd pass on some real gems.

Backward With Purpose by AlianneOfTortall
It's time travel done right when Harry, Ron, and Ginny go back to lessen the cost of "winning" the war. It's a WIP but nearly done and with a sequel planned.  6/08: Now completed with sequel here

Invert by Marz1
It's a HP/Full Metal Alchemist crossover by Marz1! What more can you ask for?
"They don't care about equivalence, only prophecy. Traveling in a strange world fighting human monsters in skull masks, Ed plans to show them how the world really works."
Also a WIP, but not forgotten.

The Goblin, the Snitch, and the Werewolf by Iniga
One of the few post Deathly Hallows fics I've read, and one of the very few I've really enjoyed.
Set immediately after DH. "Harry considers the future of the House of Potter. Andromeda considers the past of the House of Black. Teddy is where they collide. It isn’t always pretty."
Very good.
and a side story Naked Reverence  "After the second war, and her first meeting with Andromeda in a quarter-century, Narcissa talks to her husband about things they don’t understand."

Random Acts by mercutio-rane
Ten memorable acts of kindness throughout Remus Lupin's life. With a special nod at ch. 9 ; )

Happy reading!
